VOL. 2 ☕ An Oasis of Laughter Hall Monitor

My Wife Calls My Job “Hall Monitor.” So I Showed Her the Hall.

A trade compliance hall monitor blocks a shipping port while a CEO begs with a hall pass

His wife has a name for his 20 years in trade compliance.

“Hall monitor.”

And I laughed. Because it stings. Because she’s not entirely wrong.

We are the people who say no.

No, you can’t ship that yet.
No, that’s the wrong code.
No, I don’t care that it’s already on the truck, already sold, already promised to the customer. It’s coming back.

We are the kid with the clipboard and the sash, telling the whole school to slow down.

Fine. I’m a hall monitor. Come see the hall.

The hall is every port in the country.

The hall pass is a customs entry — and if yours isn’t in order, you are not getting through, and I will not lose a minute of sleep over it.

“Where are you supposed to be?” is a question I ask a shipment. If the answer is “Vietnam” but it smells like Shenzhen — sit down. We’re going to talk.

You want to run in my hall? You want to quietly slide polyester through a third country to duck a 25% tariff?

I see you. I have always seen you.

And you think a hall monitor tattles? Cute. I report to four federal agencies. I don’t tell the teacher. I tell the government.

Detention isn’t a metaphor here. I can put your container in real detention. It sits at the port. It racks up fees. It thinks about what it did.

Here’s what nobody tells you about the hall monitor.

Every kid who rolled their eyes at that sash grew up and chased a job where nobody could tell them no.

CEO. Founder. Billionaire.

A man can fire ten thousand people on a Tuesday morning and not blink. He still cannot get his sneakers off that ship without me. He has to ask. He has to file. I have watched a very important man say “please.”

For years, nobody cared that I was standing at the end of the hallway.

Then tariffs happened.

And now the entire global economy has to walk past my desk, single file, and show me a pass.

Turns out the hall monitor wasn’t the punchline. The hall monitor was just early.

You left that hallway the second the bell rang. I stayed. I own it now.

So yeah — hall monitor. My wife nailed it. She just left out that the hall is the whole world.
